Congratulations on joining the University of Southampton! We are the Electronics and Computer Science Society, the main student-led society of the ECS department. We run many events, ranging from tech-talks, workshops and hackathons, to social events like pub crawls and termly balls.
Membership is completely free and you can sign up from our SUSU page. Make sure to follow us on Instagram and to join our Discord to hear as soon as possible when we announce new events, chat with other members, and ask questions about the university, the department and the Society!

Make sure you visit our JumpStart page to get all the info for this year's big Freshers events!
JumpStart happens during Welcome week (19th September to 29th September) and is organised by us specifically for ECS Fresher students (including UGs and PGs).
It is all completely free to attend, and you can even win rewards! We are currently planning it, but anything from a scagenver hunt, to hackathon and social pizza party and games night are in the works. This is something you don't want to miss!
"Where is [insert] lecture?"
- You can visit the timetabling website to find where your lecture is, and you can use the campus map to find it (also available through MySouthampton app).
"I don't know how to code, help me!"
- If you don't know how to code, don't worry - the first year introduces the basics of it all, and you learn from scratch. You are more than encouraged to ask questions to your lecturers.
"What language do we learn?"
- In the first year, you will learn Python, Java and a little bit of C. In the second year, you will learn functional programming in Haskell and do additional projects in Java. From the third year onwards, you get more flexibility in choosing a programming language.
"I couldn't attend a lecture - what can I do?"
- Some lectures will be recorded and uploaded, and some may even be streamed. You can also ask your course makers about notes from the lecture.
"Are there any study spaces on campus?"
- Yes, Hartley Library and Building 100 have lots of desks, equipped with comfortable chairs, electrical outlets, and quiet zones. As a member of the ECS department, you get access to Building 60 West (for 1st to 3rd year), and Building 16 (from 3rd to 4th year and MSc students).
"How hard is the course?"
- The course has its easy parts, and its challenging parts - if you find it hard, check in with your friends and you will see that you are not alone in the situation. If you notice that you can't cope with the complexity, you can always ask questions on the department's Discord server.
If you feel like the course is taking a mental health toll on you, visit our "Wellbeing" page to find out more about the support that is available - because you are more than your studies.
"Insert question ## here?"
- If you feel unsure about anything uni-related, we recommend joining our Discord server and the department's Discord server - they are full of helpful people who will support you with any and all inquiries.
Our wellbeing page has lots of useful information for all students.
All our social media accounts in one place.
